1st Serve Projects 

No matter what your age, stage, or gifts and abilities, we have a project for YOU! Please take a moment to review the projects listed below.  Then simply sign-up using the online form for that project.  The project coordinator (listed after the project) will contact you with more information such as what to bring, wear, or be prepared for on the day of 1st Serve.  There are several projects where families can serve together and all are appropriate for youth.  If you need childcare for little ones 0-5 years, please complete the childcare reservation form.    


Childcare Volunteer     Melinda Miller   
Provide on-site childcare for kids 0-5years - for other volunteers that are serving on March 17 from 8:30am-12:15pm 

- 3 volunteers needed. 
- Must be middle school or above to volunteer.  

 

Celebration Lunch   LEADER NEEDED
Help set-up, prepare food, greet, and prepare for the Soup & Salad lunch. Meet & greet our guests at the luncheon and help clean up afterwards.  

- 5-7 volunteers needed - all ages are welcome to help

Cook Elementary
    --  Linda Pollock 
LaFayette Cook Elementary, located on 11th Street at Thurmund in downtown Winston-Salem is home to the Lions that ROAR!  Cook is a Title 1 school where nearly 100% of the students recieve free or reduced lunches. Projects are yet to be determined, but will likely include preparation of instructional materials (cutting, making flashcards, etc.), a large filing project and creating teacher care packages.  

-  Light landscaping (weeding current landscaping) –  2-3 people
-   Wishlist from staff – gather items from congregation before event; compile during event  and leave for staff 1-2 volunteers
-  Encouraging cards and gift bags for teachers – 2-4 or more volunteers
-  Specific teacher projects –  mostly cutting and prepping projects. 
-  Prayer walk through rooms.
- 8 volunteers total 
- All ages welcome and encouraged to participate.  

 

Crystal Towers       Julie Lanford & David Brown 
This high-rise apartment building on 6th Street is managed by the WS Public Housing Authority and provides affordable housing for the elderly and disabled.  

 -    Volunteers will prepare and serve healthy snacks, assist with health screenings (no medical knowledge needed) and visit with residents.
-     15 volunteers needed

 

Downtown Thrift           Carlo Castaneda - 
Located just off of Broad street, Downtown Thrift benefits Solus Christus.  Solus Christus is dedicated to improving the lives of women suffering from alcoholism and/or drug addiction by: introducing the Gospel, providing a safe house, assisting in Christian rehab placement, building faith in Christ and glorifying God in all things.  

-      Cleaning, tidying shelves, shifting displays around.  May also be breaking down metal racks.
-      10-12 volunteers needed
-      Some lifting, packing, cleaning.  This project is better suited to adults and middle/high school youth.  Building has no air conditioning, so dress accordingly. Light work gloves are recommended. 


 

Downtown Trash Pick-up    Al Heltzel 

  
-      Trash pick-up in a variety of areas downtown
-      25 volunteers needed.  We need at least one volunteer with a pickup truck. 
-      Volunteers should be able to walk distances while picking up trash and carrying a trash bag. 
-      Great project for youth and families.  
-      All materials (trash bags, pick-up sticks, vests and gloves) will be provided by Keep W-S Beautiful 

 

Imprints For Families        LEADER NEEDED

Imprints for Families of Winston-Salem, NC is a nonprofit organization committed to helping parents prepare their young children, from before birth through five.  Imprints believes that the success of a child depends on a holistic approach to child care. They offer a variety of programs with services ranging from educating women and their partners about prenatal care, to classes in infant massage and baby sign language, to facilitating parent-teacher collaboration during the first year of school. Imprints strengthens families through services and partnerships to prepare children for life

Mudpies Child Development Center
- Scott Seawell 

Mudpies is operated by the Northwest Child Development Center - A non-profit organization, founded in 1970 to support families by helping them meet the developmental needs of their children from infancy through school-age. NWCDC, Inc. is governed by a voluntary Board of Directors that consist of private and public citizens, and parents of four counties, Forsyth, Davie, Davidson & Stokes. Northwest has the capacity to service 700 children and families in community child care centers. 

- Washing interior windows & General cleaning throughout the childcare center
- 25 volunteers needed 
- Elementary aged children and older are welcome to work alongside parents.  


Neighbor Care Packages

A variety of on-site projects to benefit the teachers, police, fire fighters and others who serve the downtown area.

-     Volunteers Needs to take video and pictures the day of the event.

Prayer Warriors   LEADER NEEDED

Participate in a downtown prayer walk, stopping at each service location to pray.  Also opportunites to Stay & Pray and Pray Where You Are.

Rescue Mission Thrift Store - Bo & Kathy Brookby

The Rescue Mission is a Christian, non-denominational service ministry, meeting the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of hurting people in the Triad area so that we might proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ and bring glory to God. The thrift store operation of the Winston-Salem Rescue Mission generates funds to support the work of the ministry and provides an outreach to the community. The store, located in downtown Winston-Salem, offers anything from clothing to furniture, all at tremendous savings to the public.

Shalom Project                  Tom and Linda Dunlap
The mission of The Shalom Project is to serve the needs and enhance the development of West Salem and the greater Winston-Salem Community by fostering programs of compassion and justice.  The Kid's Cafe is a free afterschool program. 

 Deep clean 3 rooms: mop floors, dust, scrub sinks   
-  Organize and label the 4 bookshelf library
-  Organize art supplies
-  Remove paint and masking tape from the floors  
-  add slip-covers to 5 pieces of furniture
 Dissassemble an 8'X8' Art table  
 Remove a chalk rail and repaint a wall  
-  Create a white board using special paint  
-  10 volunteers needed - a great project for couples!  

 

Downtown Library Beautification   Jeff White

Big Brothers/Big Sisters  #1    Hardt Bing - 
Big Brothers Big Sisters' programs annually serve over 600 children ages 6-18. The mentoring relationship helps foster the physical, intellectual, emotional and moral development of a child. A result of these relationships is an individual who is better prepared to contribute positively to our community in the future.

Big Brothers/Big Sisters  #2   Jon Bolton 
Big Brothers Big Sisters' programs annually serve over 600 children ages 6-18. The mentoring relationship helps foster the physical, intellectual, emotional and moral development of a child. A result of these relationships is an individual who is better prepared to contribute positively to our community in the future.

- #2 Project description:  Carpet cleaning/shampooing of our entire office
- Able to move furniture, push vacuums, age 16+
-  5-8 volunteers needed. 

 

Lloyd Presbyterian Church   Kurt Lents - 
Lloyd Presbyterian Church is located in downtown Winston-Salem and is committed to following Jesus, growing disciples and serving God's people.  God's Open Hands Shelter is located in the basement of Lloyd and offers shelter and spiritual support to anyone in need.  

-    Painting walls of homeless shelter inside church
-    Sanding and varnishing picnic tables and benches (outside)
-    Volunteers to bring paint brushes and be prepared to get dirty. 
-    6-8 volunteers needed.

 

Legal Aid of NC           Daniel Joyce

Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC) is a statewide, nonprofit 501(c)3 law firm that provides free legal services in civil matters to low-income people in order to ensure equal access to justice and to remove legal barriers to economic opportunity.  LANC operates in all 100 counties in North Carolina through 24 geographically based offices.

Samaritan Inn project #1    John Justus 

 Samaritan Ministries is an interdenominational, volunteer based Christian ministry in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County serving hungry, homeless and people in need, 365 days a year.   

-     Yard Work - bring your own tools and trim and whack! 
-     2-3 volunteers needed
